I woke up considering the option of sleeping one more night in a BLM area (possibly the KCM campground). But after driving for a while that would have left me too many hours with nothing to do in an area where every breath you take can degrade your health easily. Actually I was surprised about how easy is to actually feel the smog in the Bakersfield area.
I ended up driving back to Newbury Park -with a small stop in Ojai.
And there I met Mike and Jacquie, again.

Once again. I avoided the quickest route (395 South). Instead, I went West, crossing the Sequoia National Forest. I considered sleeping in Chimney Creek but it was closed. Long Valley Campground seemed more promising but its gravel road deterred me from doing so after a while. So I kept driving -with some doubts regarding the pass being possibly closed. It wasn’t, although I didn’t expect that much elevation.
It became obviously noticeable that I was getting closer to denser areas (in terms of human population). All along the river that pours into the Lake Isabella, I found no place that satisfied my (increasingly exquisite) demands for spending the night. I just kept on driving.
I ended up in “Keyesville SRMA” -a place where I found the peace I was seeking. Peace only interrupted by some freak that was making sure that I wasn’t a golddigger.

D Zabriskie Point, Death Valley, Wildrose tu

Another lonely day. I woke up -without hair- in the Grand Canyon area- Kaibab National Forest. Moved quick, westbound, crossed Fredonia.
The attempts to find an original route weren’t extremely successful. By doing so I had the chance to discover new places… but I couldn’t avoid passing through Las Vegas. Somehow, I wanted to pass through Caliente and the north perimeter of the huge military area. I desisted after having to backtrack twice because of the GPS having faulty information.
After Las Vegas, I went to Death Valley: left in Amargosa- where the last brothel I will see that day was. The temperature was tolerable. Slept in Wildrose -where only the wind talked. The wind and the drunkards that arrived later.
Actually they were teenagers and weren’t drunk.
Maybe they were older than that.

I almost didn’t drive. Just to get closer to the Canyon. I think I didn’t see anybody that day. Maybe a car or two. I hiked, watched some movies and tried to shoot an HDR time-lapse of the sunset in the Canyon. Sadly, the JJC remote shutter proved itself useless- it didn’t send one of the signals. Frustration over a chinese product led me to use another chinese product.
Cut to #0. Fade out.

D Page’s second disappointment, refuge in Kaibab: Road 461 tu

2011.06.27

No paranormal activity was registered the night before. I went to Bruce Canyon. After a banana milkshake, I kept going.
Looking back. Definitely, Utah’s route 12 is impressive.
I went to Page. Bought something there. My plan was to go to Lone Rock and spend a few days there. Now that I had solar panels, I just had to find a place where I could be comfortable, socialize, and be productive.
My first time in Lone Rock (2009) was great. I cherished that memory, trying to relive it. But sadly Lone Rock disappointed me. Once again. This time I had the “America the Beautiful” pass, so it wasn’t about entering or not.
It was mainly about the quality of the water. Too many boats, throwing shit in the water. Sadly, that shit accumulated in the beach.
I planned to stay days. In ten minutes, I was gone.
I drove to Kaibab -my shelter. Once again.

I said goodbye to Miguel and his family before they left to the airport. They would take a flight to Madrid. I would continue westwards.
The front axle of the van was emitting audible signals of its increasing degeneration… of course, something to be concerned only when driving at less 40 miles per hour.
My route was practically the same as in 2010.09.17. I ended up ignoring Mack’s country festival, in order to spend more non-quality time with my mosquitoes in Rabbit Valley.
