Chachapoyas: touristic capital of the Amazonas region (ironically, the region nearest the true Amazonas is named Loreto, not Amazonas). Certain reminiscences to Cusco, in a smaller way. It is relatively near a lot of places of archaeological interest, and close to some interesting landscapes. Places like Kuélap, Lámud, Great Vilaya, Huaylla Bethlehem, Leymebamba, et cetera.

I got there from Pedro Ruiz, and lodged. The following day (28th), I went through ten kilometers of barking dogs, fearful donkeys, rain, and mud. It was uphill, to Huancas. Huancas seemed to be famous for the ceramics, but there was almost no soul there. An empty main square. For returning, I took a shared taxi, whose clients were, essentially, people who were going to visit inmates at a penitentiary close to Huancas. I wondered what happens behind those walls.
The next day (29th), I tried to go to Levanto, but it was late either to get a shared taxi (that usually leaves around 5am), or to walk (3 hours each section). And the presence of the rain was somewhat demotivating. And I kept (30th) waking up too late for Levanto. Soap opera time. On the 31st I worked with PHP (on this blog) and to recovered from the ‘7 roots’ liquor.

Pedro Ruiz, besides being the name of a terrible spanish comedian, is a town in the Tarapoto-Chiclayo route (or Tarapoto-Piura, as it was the case of the bus I was in). A town where I had to stop to get to Chachapoyas. Waiting for the shared taxi to fill up, I tasted an exquisite and economic (2 soles) chicken sandwich.

Tarapoto meant an absolute lack of sociability, along with some inactivity. The only attempt to do things was the visit to an ‘orquidiario’, but it was somewhat closed.

Limber, a taxi driver, showed his bleak angriness against the ‘motocarro’ drivers. I chose him randomly, after being harrased by a lot of taxi drivers at the airport exit. It was stressing but, in order to get used to stressful situations (which was a good practice), I just remained there for a while instead of fleeing quick. But they didn’t calm after a while, and kept shouting offers to me. While I walked calmly along the street, a horde of drivers followed me. The offers started with 7 soles, and were then with 3. It was enough. Enough stress, I mean…
After getting to the centre and waiting for the rain to go, I looked for a hostel. As in Pt. Iguazu, I almost made a market research on hostels!

Freddy [pe] was a child with some tendence to make businesses out of tourists. “One and a half soles”, he said, while trying to sell me some balloons. I could use them to find my vengeance, as I had been ‘attacked’ with water balloons by some neighbour girls. But I refused to buy them, Freddy was being too materialistic. Instead, I urged him to seek vengeance in my behalf. “Vengadme”, I said. And he did so.
He showed, some hours before, a good predisposition to learn. But his tendence to beg for money was -imho- a negative aspect of his behaviour, especially considering his age. Of course, that’s inspired by his family and his environment. And it’s a mistake.

Some similar things, from and adult, arose with Carlo [pe]. He misteriously appeared when I was looking for a place to get some beers. It was nice to know him, but it was very obvious that he was mainly interested on getting invited to beer. So I had enough of that kind of company after some beers and went to work on some pictures (with a new beer, sure).
It’s not like I didn’t want to invite: it’s that I didn’t want to be coerced to invite, no matter the means of coercion. In fact, the two compelling girls that -some hours before- ‘invited me’ to buy them an ice cream were, in my perspective, begging. In summary, it’s about using any method available to get something from the tourist. And a negative aspect of tourism, because many tourists, by paying them, get them used to beg. Miserable, considering the natural richness of the zone. And it ends in misery. In fact, I remember hearing that the U.N. advises against that kind of ‘help’ (giving money to beggars), because it causes, in the end, more poverty. There are other ways to help.

As the hostel was quite comfortable, and I had a room just for me, I stayed three days reworking on some pictures to send them to Madrid. I finished a compilation of 77 pictures. The rest of days in Iquitos were calm, not much more activity. Some walks around, and just a day of deliria with the happy Pepe [cl] and the healthy and impassible Romina [cl].

“To Yarina!”, after trying for a third time that the one employee of StarPerú learned the payment system which I was trying to use. There was a partial success: she did it visibly bad, but at least she did it. Then, in the airport, one colleague would arrive to amend the issue.
In Yarina, I was almost the only foreigner. Since I didn’t want to spend the money I hadn’t, and saw a ‘peque-peque’ sinking in the Ucayali (and I didn’t want the same destiny for me), I decided to go in a ‘colectivo’ to San José. And in this small Eden I spent some hours, with Pilsen Callao.

I went out from the airport of Pucallpa and, with the calm that I was getting used to have, I looked for the best offer to go to the center (‘Plaza de Armas’). In town, a great part of the world seemed eager to speak with me, and used all kinds of conversational resources not to show their true intentions, which were, in the majority of the cases, purely commercial. It was difficult to perceive a mere philanthropic interest to the foreigner.
Aside from making another ‘market analysis’ of the boats to Iquitos (I didn’t intend to take a boat, because I had still money in the E-MPD of StarPerú), I went to the ‘Natural Park’. In this case, ‘zoo’ would be a more precise term to use.

I didn’t want to return to Lima, but it seemed the only option. I had some money to spend in Starperú (that if I didn’t use, it would be lost), so I planned to go to the Amazon basin. But a protest in the road to Lima delayed the arrival of my bus, so I couldn’t get to the airport in time for the flight (I didn’t have the ticket, but I knew the simple schedule of flights). Therefore, I had to stay one night in Lima.

11. Colca morning, having slept less than one hour.
12. Return from Colca, in the evening. MC is still in the hostel, and so a Colombian couple that reminded me of ‘Malasaña’. Hot dogs.
13. MC leaves in the morning. Not much of a day, strolling the town again. Meting more people: an Ecuadorian rasta who works with balloons and children, Jerome [fr?] who remained in Bolivia for half a year.
14. A new one appeared: an Argentinean, with musical studies whose friends were in Iquitos. 15h30, bus to Lima.

Being so close, I had to visit the Colca Canyon. It has more than twice the depth of the Colorado Canyon, though its walls are not that vertical. It’s around 160 Km (100 miles) from Arequipa. The trip was a torture: not because of the bus, nor the altitude (that reached the 4900 meters), but due to the hungover. I blamed cocktails with names like ‘satanás’ or ‘ antillano’.
While progressively recovering my conscience in a process that lasted hours, I met the people who went in the bus. Stephan [ca], Matías [ar], Iván [ar], Cecile [dk], Alan [UK], and some others.
After strolling through some ruins, going to some spa-like pools, and having dinner, we spent the night in Chivay. On the following day (11), we woke up early (5:30), crossed the valley of the Colca, and got to the Canyon. We got to the famous ‘Cruz of Condor’ viewpoint, but, unfortunately, we just saw one condor, and far away. It was time of nesting, and there was too many clouds in the sky.

Once I got used to go with tours and to have everything planned for me, I was left alone. What was I going to do with my recovered need to decide by myself?
I spent some more days in Arequipa, mainly processing pictures. But I had time also for other activities: I met the positively hyperactive Emmanuel [fr, pt], and the eager Karima [de]. I went out in a night of alcoholic extremes (and not only in ‘Deja vû’) with Maricruz [MX], just before going to the Colca. And I made some other things that I will remember when neccesary.
